Northview Titans Junior Varsity Boys Game Summary

Northview v. Mill Creek, 3-0
March 21st

When the game started at 5:55pm, it was 62 F and the conditions were fine.

The game began slowly with both teams looking for their first win of the season. The Titans first put the Hawks under pressure after 6 minutes when Alex Tertichney took the ball down the right wing and passed to Pall Kornmayer whose shot was blocked. The rebound went to Ross Cantrell who laid the ball off to Tyler Dewitt before it went out for a throw. From the throw, Josh Hoehn attacked the Hawks' defense before the ball was cleared.

The Hawks countered by winning the first corner of the game in the 7th minute. Pall Kornmayer defended well, bringing the ball out of the danger area & passing to Russell Bradford who managed to get a shot on goal. The Titans were looking good & pushing forward. Pall passed to Russell who gave it to Sam Bevan whose shot was deflected for a throw-in near the corner flag. Sam's throw went to Jason Alwes. The goal keeper was unable to hold Jason's shot, giving the Titans their first corner but it came to nothing.

Josh Dunn played a "give-and-go" with Alex Tertichney to bring the ball out of the Titan's defense. Following a pass from Pall, Alex managed a long range shot on goal which the keeper collected. A couple of minutes later, the same two players teamed up again to force a good save from the keeper near the right post. Just after this, Aaron Kim replaced Bader Kashlan in the Titans' goal.

After 14 minutes, Ross Cantrell played a nice ball to Russell Bradford whose shot was blocked giving the Titans their second corner. Again nothing came from the corner. The Titans were playing well but were giving the ball away too easily. Thankfully, Ramu Annamalai had his usual steady game in the heart of the Titans' defense.

In the 18th minute, Russell Bradford got the ball at the half-way line, raced down the left wing, & then cut in to the Hawks' penalty box to score the Titans' first open-play goal of the season, after 378 minutes. The Titans had scored their first goal, a penalty, only 31 minutes earlier, so the boys are drastically reducing the time between goals!

Some end-to-end play occurred with first the Hawks winning a corner and then the Titans counter-attacking. It ended with Pall Kornmayer hitting the crossbar with a shot. Then it was the Hawks' turn to shoot over the crossbar. At the 28 minute mark, Chase Collier had a long range shot which was just high. Tyler Dewitt gave the ball to Ross Cantrell whose cross was headed to Steve Kim who passed it to Sam Bevan. Sam crossed the ball which the keeper fumbled under a Titan challenge. The ball fell to Alex Tertichney who put it in the net only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul on the keeper.

With 4 minutes left the Titans controlled the ball in mid-field & pressed the Hawks back in their defense. Steve Kim was fouled 15 yards outside the penalty box & Sam Bevan's low, hard shot was just wide. In the last minute, Sam won a penalty which he took himself. The first shot was saved & Sam hit the rebound off the crossbar before Pall drove the ball into the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for another foul on the keeper.

The Hawks began the 2nd half determined to attack, but in the 2nd minute of that half, Sam Bevan's long throw to Alex Tertichney near the left post was turned across the face of the goal & Steve Kim scored to make it 2 - 0. (Things are looking good - it's only 19 minutes since the last goal.) The Hawks then won a corner & Northview had to head the ball off the line to save the shut-out. Jason Alwes made a nice move in the 6th minute passing to Sam who played it to Steve Kim & he put through a great ball to Alex who ran through to make it 3 - 0 (Wow, 4 minutes between goals! Can they keep it up?)

After 9 minutes Jonathan Lee came into the game at right back, just as the Titans were keeping the pressure on the Hawks. In the 12th minute, the Titans nearly grabbed their 4th goal as a shot hit the cross bar. Four minutes later, Nathan Thompson came into the left side of defense. He was in action soon thereafter & made a clean clearance under pressure. Coach Folds was using the opportunity to give everyone playing time & Sung Baek came on with 10 minutes remaining. Josh Taylor was subbed in but his previous injuries prevented him from finishing the game. With 6 minutes left, one mop-top replaced another as Bader Kashlan came in for Russell Bradford.

The game began to fizzle out without much action but in the dying seconds the Titans pushed forward once more with Bader breaking down the right wing. Nothing came of it & the game ended...

3 - 0 for the Titans' first win of the season. Well done, boys!
