Northview Titans Junior Varsity Girls Game Summaries

Northview v Parkview - 0-0
March 5th, 2007

A cool, crisp March evening in Parkview’s storied Big Orange Jungle was the setting for the Northview JV girl’s soccer team return to action. It was a hard, evenly fought match, with both teams making tremendous defensive stops, yet squandering multiple scoring opportunities -- that ultimately ended in a 0-0 draw.

The starting lineup consisted of Shelby Apps, Daria Gound, and Carly Martini up top; midfielders Kellie Aarons, Kelley Hoehn and Samantha Edwards; defenders Lisa Johnson, Mara Hamilton, Kylie Janusek and Michelle DiPietro; and goalkeeper Hannah Riddle. And it looked as if the girls came to play as they got off to a quick start, immediately putting pressure on the Panther defense.

The first seven to eight minutes were dominated by Northview, with early opportunities coming on shots from Apps and Johnson. But at about the 26:00 minute mark, the Parkview midfielders began to take control of the field, consistently getting the best of the Titans on 50-50 balls. For the remainder of the half, Northview had very few offensive moments. Perhaps the best chance for a score came with just two minutes left in the period when a scramble in the box forced the Panther keeper out of the net. However, Northview’s subsequent shot on the open goal was wide left.

The second half saw the Titans come out with a little more spunk. But the story boiled down to neither team being able to capitalize on defensive breakdowns. All Northview’s shots were either right to the opposing goalie, or wide of the mark. At the 24:35 mark, Riddle made an aggressive play coming out of the box for a stop; the ball, however, was not cleared cleanly, landing right at the feet of a Parkview player. What looked to be a certain goal ended up going wide, and the Parkview faithful could not believe their bad luck.

Northview came right down the field following the Parkview miscue, but missed an open goal opportunity themselves. And that’s the way it went for the rest of the night. At the 16:00 minute mark, and then again at 14:00, the Titans failed to score. Finally, with 2:45 remaining, Carly Martini looked to have the go ahead goal only to see the shot trickle to the right of the net. While frustrated to be shut out for the second straight game, the Lady Titans were probably fortunate to walk away with the tie. Defensively, keeper Hannah Riddle had another solid performance.

Next up for Northview is a road game against arch rival Chattahoochee, scheduled for Thursday, March 8.
