Northview Titans Junior Varsity Girls Game Summaries
Northview v Chattahoochee - 8-0
March 8th, 2007
The Northview JV girls traveled to arch rival Chattahoochee, and christened the host teams’ new field turf surface with a commanding 8-0 victory. Breaking out of their offensive slump, the girls were led in scoring by Shelby Apps’ hat trick and Hillary Millard’s two goals. Other scores were notched by Anna Kornmayer and Carly Martini, plus an own goal for the Cougars.
The Lady Titans started quickly, getting their first shot on goal a little over a minute into the contest. And although the shot by Millard was high, it seemed to set the tempo and that the Northview forwards and midfields would be able to move the ball at will. However, Chattahoochee almost struck first when a scramble in front of the Titan goal after a Cougar corner kick resulted in an open shot that luckily was off the mark. That would be the only excitement keeper Hannah Riddle would see all night, as Northview completely shut down the Cougar offense..
With just over 27:00 showing on the clock, Northview fired a shot on the Chattahoochee goal. The keeper cleared the ball out to Anna Kornmayer, positioned well outside the 18. Kornmayer sent a beautiful arcing shot over the keeper and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The defense really dug in at this point, led by Lisa Johnson, Mara Hamilton, Caitlin Swindall, Michelle DiPietro and Kylie Janusek. Midfielders Kellie Aarons, Samantha Howard, Kelley Hoehn and Kornmayer continued to feed passes up to the waiting forwards, but for the next few minutes the Titans were unable to breakthrough for a second score. With about 15 minutes to go in the half, Northview got a scare has Johnson collided with a Chattahoochee player and had to leave the game, spending the rest of the evening on the bench with ice on her knee. As one sided as play had been in favor of the Northview, the score was still perilously close, and the prospect of losing Johnson was daunting. But you could feel that the Titan defense was up to the task.
Not long after, Millard won a battle for the ball on the near sideline and sent a beautiful pass to the middle, where forwards Shelby Apps and Carly Martini were both in perfect position to receive the ball. It was Apps that finished it and put the Titans on top 2-0.
On the next possession, Martini had a break up the middle and sent a perfect lead out pass to Millard coming up the right side, who managed to stay on side and fire a shot past the keeper for the goal and the 3-0 lead. Northview scored again a minute or so later when Apps sent a high crossing pass to the goal mouth. The ball was misplayed by the Cougar defender who knocked it into her own goal.
Now up 4-0, the Lady Titans had Chattahoochee on the ropes, and continued to take shots. With about 2:00 minutes left in the half, Martini again took the ball right up the middle, made a move and fired the shot decisively into the net for the score and the 5-0 lead at the half.
The second half opened with Jessica Cerverizzo in goal for the Lady Titans, and continued offensive pressure from Northview. Daria Gound got things off quickly with a nice run up the sideline, that resulted in a corner kick. A few minutes later, Caitlin Swindall had a free kick from a penalty just outside the box, but the Chattahoochee keeper made the save. Then, Millard received a pass right in front of the goal. She fired a right footed shot that bounced of the goalie, and followed it with a nice left footed shot that sailed past for the score. Northview now had an imposing 6-0 lead.
Apps, Martini, Gound, Millard and Kornmayer all continued to take shots but came up short. And Kellie Aarons dominated the middle of the field, continually shutting down the Cougars before the y could develop and offensive play. Finally, Shelby Apps took a long shot from deep in the left corner that the keeper could not reach. With a 7-0 lead, the barrage continued. Millard fired a shot that bounced off the post and was put away by Kornmayer, only to have the goal called back as the official claimed the Chattahoochee goalie had possession.
Late in the period, Chattahoochee had one breakaway that reached the Northview goal area. But a hard tackle by Caitlin Swindall seemed to squelch the opportunity. However, she was not only called for a foul in the box, she received a yellow card as well. However, Chattahoochee’s penalty kick was snuffed out by Cerverizzo on a beautiful stop, preserving the shut out.
The final score of the game came on a terrific give and go (and give and go!) sequence between Apps and Gound, with Apps getting the final pass for the shot, the score, the hat trick and the 8-0 score. A final shot by Millard as time ran out banged off the crossbar and dropped on the line – but was ruled no goal.
All in all, it was an outstanding performance by the Northview girls. After two straight games of shut out ball offensively, it was nice to see them return to the scoring successes they saw in their first two matches. And the defense blanked their third opponent of the season, having given up only one goal all season. Next up for the 3-1-1 Lady Titans is yet another road game against Milton on Monday, March 12.
