Northview Titans Junior Varsity Girls Game Summaries
Northview v Centennial - 9-0
April 8th, 2007
The JV girls soccer team closed out their 2007 campaign by hosting the Knights of Centennial, and finished out the season with an offensive explosion and a complete domination of their opponent. Six different girls scored, led by Shelby Apps’ second hat trick of the season, and the Lady Titans walked away with an easy 9-0 victory.
With temperatures feeling more like February than April, a late 7:30 kick off, and a two week break since their last match, one had to wonder how sharp the girls would be. They wasted no time in putting any fears to rest as their first shot on goal game less than a minute into the game – and although it was off the mark, it came with relative ease. Several minutes later, forward Carly Martini broke free on the right sideline, and took a long shot from a very difficult angle. This time the ball was on target and Northview had an early 1-0 lead. Less than minute later, Daria Gound sent a perfect cross that went just past the Knights’ goal. Midfielder Kelley Hoehn was positioned perfectly, however, and put the ball in the net for the 2-0 lead.
At the 25:30 mark, a speedy Centennial forward weaved through the defense and sprinted her way to a one on one opportunity with Titan goalie Hannah Riddle. What looked to be a certain score was stuffed on a spectacular save by Riddle, preserving the two goal lead. Two minutes later, Northview capitalized on a corner kick opportunity when Kellie Aarons popped the loose ball past the Centennial keeper.
With the score now 3-0, the Lady Titans could feel that they already had their opponent on the ropes, so the pressure kept coming from the midfielders and forwards. With just over 18:00 to go in the half, defender Lisa Johnson sent a nice ball up and over the Knights midfield. Shelby Apps exploded past her mark and raced towards the goal unchallenged. The keeper could do nothing as Apps’ laser shot drilled the back of the net to put the score at 4-0.
Centennial’s offense was very limited, depending upon the talent and speed of one forward. She again broke free and looked to have a one on one, when out of nowhere came a blazing Caitlin Swindall who made a perfect tackle to break up the play. The other defenders -- Mara Hamilton, Lisa Johnson, Kylie Janusek, Michelle DiPietro, and Jessica Cerverizzo – all made stops to shut down the centennial attack.
With 15:00 to go in the period, Gound again sent a nice outlet pass to Apps who easily beat her mark and notched her second goal of the evening to make the score 5-0. Several minutes later, Apps again fired a shot on goal. This time the ball was deflected back out into play, landing right at the feet of Samantha Howard. Sam did not hesitate and immediately fired back on goal, scoring the sixth goal of the half.
And still the Titans were not through. With just over 11:00 to go, Howard trapped a ball, settled it and arced a shot over the keeper for the 7-0 lead. The only drama in the remainder of the first half came on a Centennial corner kick. Titan keeper Hannah Riddle went up high to field the kick only to be leveled by the Knights. She was slow to get up, but was able to shake it off and remain in goal.
The second half saw the Northview girls pick up right where they left off in the first half – that is, applying continuous pressure to the Centennial defense. The first few minutes saw multiple shots, but the next score came when midfielder Anna Kornmayer launched a long shot that sailed over everyone, including the Knight’s goalie, and landed in the back of the net for the 8-0 lead. And shortly thereafter, Aarons sent a beautiful lead out pass to Apps, who again beat her mark and score easily, completing the hat trick, and closing the scoring out with a commanding 9-0 lead.
As Hillary Millard and the other offensive players maintained the onslaught by taking shot after shot, the defense never broke. They even drew a yellow card from the Centennial forward who was obviously frustrated at coming so close to breaking free, only to be denied time after time.
So the score stood at 9-0 when the final whistle blew, and the Northview Lady Titans finished out their season in grand style. Their record stands at 6-1-4, having scored 28 goals. Scoring on the season broke down as follows: Shelby Apps – 8; Carly Martini – 5; Hillary Millard – 4; Daria Gound – 3; Kelli Aarons – 2; Anna Kornmayer – 2; Samantha Howard – 2; Kelley Hoehn – 1; Kylie Janusek – 1.
Not enough can be said about the play of the defense, led by keeper Hannah Riddle and augmented by Lisa Johnson, Mara Hamilton, Caitlin Swindall, Michelle DiPietro, Kylie Janusek and Jessica Cerverizzo. As mentioned, they only gave up 3 goals all season, and tallied an astounding eight shutouts along the way!
Congratulations to Coach Connor and the 2007 JV Girls soccer team on a great season!
