Goal Club Meeting Minutes
January 10, 2008
The meeting of the Goal Club Board was called to order at 4:30 p.m. The four board members were present, as well as Coaches Cianciola, Barr, Lee, and Conner.
The game schedules have been finalized and will be posted on the website. The varsity coaches have requested 3 referees for each home game. The school pays for them. Unfortunately, often there are not enough referees available on a given night to have 3, but they are budgeted and requested for each home game.
Meet the Coaches Night is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16 in the NHS media center. The updated brochure was presented to the coaches for review. Volunteer sign-up sheets will be available, as well as booster membership forms.
The coaches have decided to move tryouts forward a week, so they will start Tuesday, January 22 (21st is a holiday) instead of January 28. Current pre-participation physical forms must be on file at school for anyone planning on trying out. Tryouts will conclude early the following week, with team lists finalized by Tuesday, January 29. Players will meet with the coaches after school on that day for uniform fittings and to get information on the Kick-Off Dinner. Due to this change, the final week for Rapid pre-season conditioning will be the week of January 14. **
The Kick-Off Dinner will be held in the NHS food court on Thursday, January 31. Aside from the introduction of the teams and the pot luck dinner, a number of important things will take place: the $300 player fee will be collected (Titan Booster Club memberships will be available for purchase, as any funds designated for soccer offset player fees dollar for dollar.), $50 uniform deposit checks will be collected, the 2008 handbooks will be distributed, and team meetings will take place, where it will be mandatory for each family to fulfill some sort of volunteer role as well as sign transportation forms.
The Pancake Eat-a-Thon is scheduled at IHOP on February 6 right after practice. It was decided this year to have it after teams are chosen, rather than before, because players not making the teams didn’t turn in their pledge money anyway. It will be required that each player secure a minimum of $100 in pledges. Pledge forms will be passed out at the Kick-Off dinner.
The budget was discussed. This year another $7,000 turf payment will be required and $7,000 should be put aside to replenish the uniform fund. It is unclear whether there will be a Spring Gala this year. Repeated requests to Angela Turnbow, President of the Titan Booster Club, for confirmation and information have gone unanswered. Without the Gala, which has been soccer’s most successful fundraiser in years past, another source of income will have to be found. Although the SPARQ event held November 11 was not successful due to lack of participation, holding another one in the spring will be considered. Coaches’ expense has declined due to the fact that there are fewer community coaches. Current budget reflects an annual payment of $1,850 to Coach Bourne, and $1,500 to Coach Mora. Fulton County Schools covers salaries for the head varsity and junior varsity coaches.
The budget for pre-game meals is $5,000, which will be divided among the teams to use as they wish. Some like to provide snacks before home games, in addition to meals for the away games. Once again, due to the high cost, the Goal Club has not budgeted funds to cover use of the Titantron for home games; parent benefactors have paid for this in the past. Any financial offers must be made through Board members, not directly to the coaches.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
**Post- meeting addendum: The Rapid sessions will total only 12 with this change, instead of the originally contracted 16. (They had originally been scheduled for the week of finals, which accounts for the other 2 “lost”.) David Migliore has scheduled make-up sessions which were sent to the players; no refunds will be made, but individuals can contact him to set up alternative make-up sessions if desired.
