Goal Club Meeting Minutes

October 25, 2007

The members of the Goal Club board were present, along with Coaches Barr and Cianciola.  Mike Scaggs, Mike Berenger, and David Migliore from Rapid Sports Performance were also present.

The purpose of the meeting was to hear from the representatives of Rapid Sports regarding the proposed SPARQ event and their ideas for pre-season conditioning of Northview soccer athletes. (Tom Bender of X-Factor Sports Programs had met with Beth Stern, Jamie Nelson, Coach Barr and Coach Cianciola on October 16 and made a presentation regarding his proposal for pre-season soccer training.)  Rapid has made it clear that they consider the SPARQ event (see Sept.13 meeting minutes) and a pre-season conditioning program to be a package deal.  In other words, if we were to consider using X-Factor Sports or anyone else for pre-season training Rapid would not enter into a partnership with Northview for the SPARQ event.

Mike Scaggs, general manager, explained that the pre-season testing done on NHS soccer athletes this past weekend at Rapid is not the same as what will take place at the SPARQ combine, which is what we had originally thought.  Any athlete who was unable to attend over the weekend should contact Mike to schedule another time to come in. NHS soccer players who wish to take part in the combine may do so at no cost due to the misunderstanding.  Mike, along with Mike Berenger, director of training, went on to outline the Rapid Sports Performance program and what they do.  They create a sport specific program that is progressive in nature.  It includes a session on injury prevention and focuses on skills rather than drills.  The cost of the program will be $240 per athlete for 16 sessions (twice a week) of one hour each.  An early registration date will be set, which will reduce the cost to $200.

Rapid’s desire is to have a partnership with Northview soccer, rather than an event by event relationship.  Since the SPARQ combine event could be a big fundraiser, it was agreed to enter a year-to-year partnership with Rapid.   The SPARQ event is set for November 11.  At this point very few athletes have registered, although all coaches at Northview have been personally contacted.  The Rapid staff agreed to visit a couple of other high schools in the area where our coaches have some contacts and personally explain the event and hand out flyers.

It was agreed to hold a mandatory parent meeting to discuss the pre-season training and have athletes sign up and parents pay.  November 1 was set as the date.
