Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries

Northview v. Milton - 4-0
February 14th

The Titans welcomed the new season with a solid 4-0 victory over the Milton Eagles, showcasing the depth of the squad for the 2006 season, and letting the Eagles know that future Titan teams would likely be a challenge as well.  In addition to several returning seniors showing strong play, many new and returning juniors and sophomores played well, and new keeper Will Whorton proved he’s the man for the Titan net, in this shutout win.

Goals came from Andrew Cameron at 10 minutes, and from Jeff Scannella at 35 minutes and 40 minutes in the first half.  Scannella added his 3rd score at 16 minutes of the second half.

Northview passed well most of the night, and were caught offsides a few times on promising runs.  On defense, while showing a single lapse midway in the second half, the Titans controlled the flow in their own half often and took the ball away multiple times.  The Titans beat the Eagles to the ball most of the night in open area and won the majority of aerial challenges at midfield.

Milton’s game style was to drive long free kicks into the box from as far as midfield, but keeper Whorton caught or punched out each attempt that came near.  While Milton had a few sustained offensive bursts that each lasted a few minutes, few shots were taken close in, and the Eagles missed high over the bar on a few open chances.  Fair play was marred by three yellow cards shown, one to the Eagles and two to the Titans.

Highlights:

10 min
Andrew Cameron scores from in close.  GOAL!

16 min
Sam Bevan passes in from 30 yards to Cameron just inside the box, with Milton’s keeper coming out to challenge. Cameron got around him, but the Eagles defense was able to clear out of bounds.

18 min
A header by Steve Gulia clears toward midfield, but Milton gains possession again, passes in to the 18 line, and Will Whorton beats a rushing attacker to the ball to shut down the attack.

20 min
Milton controls in the Titans’ half for four minutes but gets no shots to the net; a Titan foul by Bevan near the right line at 30 yards out gives a free kick that results in nothing, as the Titans hold firm.

27 min
Jeff Scanella is called for a hold 40 yards out; the free kick to the 6 is headed on net, but Whorton saves up high.

35 min
Scanella’s run on the left finds the Eagles with a desperate thrash at the ball; a tripping foul gives Jeff a penalty kick, which he drills in hard; Milton’s keeper saves but can’t control; Scanella pounces on the rebound and pushes the ball low right for a GOAL!

40 min
Scanella dribbles past two defending Eagles on the left, and rips a shot low across the box toward the far post from 10 yards.  An Eagle defender got a foot on it and redirected it -- from entering the net at the far post -- to a center of the net GOAL!

41 min
Titan free kick from 35 yards on the left is crossed in to Jimmy Mitchell at 15 yards, but his shot goes wide right.  On the next drive, Mitchell created a one on one and forced Milton to clear over the touch line deep in the corner.

43 min
AJ Johnson is tripped at 22 yards on the left, and the free kick is crossed in to Cameron Pratt in the box; he heads it just over the crossbar.

45-49 min
Milton controls in the Titan half, but the defense prevents any shots from being attempted.

52 min
Successive Titan fouls by Gulia and Johnson allow Milton to drive long free kicks in to the box; on the second, Whorton leaps at 5 yards and punches out the dangerous ball.

56 min
Andrew Cameron puts a beautiful touch pass to Jeff Scannella, with Jeff drawing out the keeper, then dribbling around him and driving in the Titans’ 4th GOAL!

62 min
AJ draws a foul with a solid stiff arm at midfield, and Milton’s free kick is on frame, but Whorton camps under it like a centerfielder and makes the catch.

65 min
Solid passing into space by Northview’s offense, to keep looking for an opportunity; the shot finally comes but is high from 8 yards out.

67 – 68 min
Whorton makes a great save after the Titans defense is caught in a 3 on 2.  The Eagles drove the ball from 16 yards on the left, with a hard, low shot that Whorton stopped and covered.
A second time, the Eagles put the ball to an attacker at 10 yards on the right after stealing a Titan throw in, but his shot went high.
A third time, after Mario Perazza is called for a push 40 yards from his own goal (right after a no-call on Milton roughing up Perazza), the Eagles free kick careens off the cross bar with no harm done.
