Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries

Northview v. S Forsyth War Eagles 3-1
February 20, 2007

Would it be third time lucky for the Titans?  They have played the South Forsyth War Eagles twice over the last two seasons and come out on the wrong end both times.  In his quest for victory, Coach C began tonight’s game with the following starting eleven:

Will Whorton
Tanner Chamblin         Caulin Collier              Jarrod Nesser              Sam Bevan
Dan Schwartz             Jacob Lee                    Stephen Glover           Pall Kornmayer
Russell Bradford         Eric Carrion

At the kick-off, the temperature was about 50F but there was a heavy drizzle coming down.  Trying in vain to keep dry on the bench was the rest of the Titans squad: Ramu Annamalai; Josh Taylor; Steve Kim; Cameron Pratt; Carter Rhoad; Jimmy Mitchell; and Nathan Thompson.

The Titans kicked-off attacking the TitanTron end.  Starting brightly, the War Eagles won a throw-in midway into the Titan half.  The throw went over the heads of all the outfield players and was collected by Will Whorton.  In the 3rd minute, Stephen Glover & Eric Carrion worked the ball down the right wing but it went out for a War Eagles goal kick.  The next minute Stephen Glover, Russell Bradford & Eric Carrion combined to feed the ball to Dan Schwartz who shot wide of the left post.  Next, and as so often happens, the referee ignored the advantage rule and called back a Titans move to award them a free kick outside of the box.  Jarrod Neser headed the free kick wide.  The Titans kept the War Eagles pinned in their own half and it was not until the 10th minute that they made an attack when Tanner Chamblin was quick to respond and turned a likely corner into a throw-in near the corner flag.

The Titans worked a nice move down the left when Stephen Glover passed the ball to Sam Bevan.  Sam laid it off for Eric Carrion who gave it to Pall Kornmayer.  Pall then played it back to Stephen who was fouled just outside the left corner of the penalty box.  Stephen took the free kick which went just wide of the right post.

In the 14th minute there was some end-to-end action as Russell Bradford made a quick break before crossing the ball into the center where a couple of Titans tried to get shots on goal.  The War Eagles’ counterattack was stopped and Jarrod Nesser had a long range shot go wide.  Northview pushed forward and the War Eagles cleared the ball to the halfway line where Caulin Collier, playing as last man in the sweeper’s role, intelligently gave away a free kick for a professional foul to stop a War Eagles break.

After 20 minutes, Jimmy Mitchell and Ramu Annamalai were brought in for Pall & Eric and both immediately got involved in the Northview offensive.  Unfortunately, the Titans kept trying to make one more touch before shooting and often the chances went begging.

The Titans were controlling the game as the strong central midfield pairing of Jacob Lee & Stephen Glover got them involved in nearly every move.

In the 32nd minute, the War Eagles took a free kick from the midfield and as Will Whorton caught the ball near the touch line, the referee, much to Will’s chagrin, decided he had crossed the line with the ball and awarded a corner.  From the corner, the War Eagles got a shot on goal which Will had to dive to his right, to tip around the post for another corner.

The starting line up came back for the beginning of the second half.  They immediately attacked the War Eagles and Stephen Glover, Tanner Chamblin, Jarrod Neser, Pall Kornmayer, Sam Bevan and Jacob Lee were all involved in the early play which won a throw-in deep in the War Eagles’ half.  Jarrod’s long throw was headed by Eric Carrion towards the goal.  In the 44th minute, Jacob “Hit Man” Lee picked up a yellow card and was temporarily replaced for a few seconds by Jimmy Mitchell.  The War Eagles were playing better this half and in the 48th minute, Jimmy Mitchell subbed in for Eric Carrion.  Jimmy took up his usual position on the right side of midfield & Dan Schwartz moved up front.  Two minutes later the Titans came close to taking the lead as Stephen Glover found Pall on the left wing.  Dan Schwartz met Pall’s cross but his shot ricocheted off a defender and Russell Bradford just missed the deflection with the goal close by.

Jimmy Mitchell then hit the bar in the 53rd minute after starting and finishing a move with Russell & Pall.  The Titans were all over the War Eagles at this stage of the game and looked sure to score sooner rather than later.  Eric Carrion came back on in the 61st minute and immediately got involved in a move with Jarrod Neser, Dan Schwartz and Jacob Lee.  Jacob fed the ball to Russell Bradford who worked a give-and-go with Eric before shooting into the left side of the goal to give the Titans a well deserved lead.

The War Eagles tried to pick up their game but Caulin Collier and Tanner Chamblin were playing solidly in the Titans’ defense and stopped them on more than one occasion.

In the 67th minute Jarrod Neser passed to Jimmy Mitchell who slid it on to Eric Carrion and as Eric brought it into the box, he tried to beat two defenders and was brought down to give the Titans a penalty.  Sam Bevan quickly claimed the ball and calmly stroked away the penalty to give the Titans a 2—lead.

Nothing much happened in the last ten minutes as the Titans seemed content to just control the game and wind down slowly while maintaining their two goal margin.

Final score: Northview Titans 2 - 0 South Forsyth
