Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries
Northview v. Chamblee Bulldogs 2-1
February 22, 2008
For our second home game of the season we entertained the undefeated Chamblee Bulldogs which were undefeated this season. Although they play AAA they were going to be a tough opponent. It was drizzling and a cool 47 degrees at kick-off with the starting line up being:-
Carter Rhoad
Tyler Chamblin Caulin Collier Jarrod Neser Chase Reineke
Chris Britton Jacob Lee Tanner Chamblin Dan Schwartz
Eric Carrion Chad Elsey
Will ‘Hoos Your Daddy? Whorton has a broken hand and looks as though he is going to miss a few games. Northview began the game defending the TitanTron end and quickly put pressure on Chamblee, winning a corner after two minutes. Nothing came of that but in the 5th minute Eric Carrion was fouled 28 yds out and Jacob Lee’s free kick caused the Bulldog keeper to save well to his left. Northview kept up the attack and Chris Britton fed Chad Elsey on the right wing. He passed to Eric Carrion who centered the ball to the six yard box where Chris Britton had continued his run after the initial pass. Chris’ shot went in near the far post to give the Titans an early and deserved lead after 6 minutes.
Chamblee had some good players and looked as though they would be dangerous but Carter Rhoad did not touch the ball until the 9th minute. Northview had a lucky escape in the 13th minute when the Bulldogs got into the Titan penalty area only for the referee to refuse the advantage and pull them back for a free kick 8 yds outside of the penalty area. The resultant free kick went wide. The boys were beginning to get a little physical and the referee would have to keep on top of it before it could get out of control.
After 17 minutes, Coach C began his substitutions with Jeff Degen replacing Eric Carrion and then Stephen Dunbar replaced Chad Elsey. Dan Schwartz was injured in the 23rd minute and was replaced by Jason Scannella and Russell Bradford replaced Chase Reineke. In the 26th minute a Jacob Lee corner was headed down by Jarrod Neser and the goalie dived to his right to catch the ball.
Jason Scannella was in the thick of things in the 29th minute when he was fouled quite heavily but the Bulldog player escaped a card. Seconds later another foul on Jason did earn the Bulldogs a yellow card. With 3 minutes left in the half Jamie Sanclemente replaced Chris Britton, who was suffering an injury, just before Jacob Lee took a free kick which the Chamblee keeper punched clear. End to end stuff and then with a minute left Russell Bradford got a yellow card for not retreating quickly enough from a free kick. Chase Reineke came on and even though Chamblee won a corner the Titans held on.
The second half saw Jason Scannella replace Chris Britton as Coach C otherwise went back to his starting line up. Chamblee began the half with incredible intensity and nearly scored after 12 seconds! After 90 seconds they had the ball in the Northview net only to be, quite correctly, ruled offside. Northview counter attacked and Eric Carrion forced a good save from the keeper as he turned and shot on target in the 44th minute. Eric forced another save from the goalie two minutes later.
Northview had to defend and they began to clear the ball anywhere. Caulin Collier was injured during one clearance and had to be subbed out by Jeffrey Degen in the 53rd minute. Tanner Chamblin was playing in a defensive midfield role and made some welcome tackles to save the Titans on more than one occasion. Luck was against the Titans in the following minute as a Chamblee forward cleverly won a penalty as two Titan defenders closed in on him as he ran away from the goal. Despite Carter Rhoad’s valiant effort, Chamblee scored from the penalty to tie the game 1 – 1.
The Titans pushed forward and Chad Elsey had two good opportunities which narrowly missed the target. Caulin Collier returned at the expense of Jason Scannella in the 57th minute and shortly thereafter Chad made way for Stephen Dunbar. Following a dangerous free kick by Chamblee, Jacob Lee made a nice clearance to Stephen Dunbar whose flick-on nearly resulted in a Northview breakaway.
In the 68th minute, against the run of play, Jeffrey Degen made a wonderful pass to Eric Carrion and as Eric ran in from the right side of the box he cleverly slid the ball under the body of the diving Chamblee goalie. A nice pass and a nice goal to give Northview the lead. Russell Bradford came on for Chase Reineke but he went upfront with Tanner Chamblin dropping back into the defense. Northview’s defense with Caulin Collier and Tyler Chamblin were holding up well as Dan Schwarz, Russell Bradford and Jeffrey Degen tried to counter attack quickly down the left wing. With seven minutes left Jarrod Neser sent Russell Bradford down the wing and as he clashed with the full back got a second yellow card. Jason Scannella replaced him and the Titans held on to win the game despite the bizarre antics of the referee. With Chamblee pushing for an equalizer and Northview killing time, a foul by Northview with 62 seconds left did not result in the game clock being stopped until 55 seconds were left. The referee decided to assume control of the time on the field and played for another two minutes twenty five seconds! He even managed to find time to yellow card Jason Scannella for not retreating on a free kick.
Final score: Northview Titans 2 – 1 Chamblee Bulldogs
