Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries
Northview v. Wheeler Wildcats 3-2
March 5, 2008
On another cold evening, the Titans kicked-off their second game in two nights in a 4-4-2 formation:-
Carter Rhoad
Tyler Chamblin Caulin Collier Jarrod Neser Chad Elsey
Chris Britton Jacob Lee Tanner Chamblin Dan Schwartz
Jeffrey Degen Eric Carrion
Wheeler was a ranked team so Northview were going to be tested tonight and Wheeler’s forwards were expected to cause problems with their speed. Indeed within the first five minutes Wheeler was twice called for offside as they tried a quick breakthrough. In the 7th minute, Chad Elsey played Eric Carrion through and he won a corner which Jacob Lee took. Dan Schwartz could only head it wide. Wheeler then beat the off–side trap and Carter Rhoad made a good save. Another break won Wheeler a corner after Tyler Chamblin and Chad Elsey put pressure on the Wheeler forward. From the corner, Wheeler shot wide. The warning signs were there and Northview had to heed them.
Following a yellow card to a Wheeler player, Chad Elsey’s free kick was trapped by Tanner Chamblin at the edge of the box. He turned a fired in a low shot which went wide in the 16th minute. Jacob Lee then forced a save from the keeper two minutes later. Coach C’s first substitution came in the 22nd minute when Jason Scannella replaced Chris Britton.
The Titans were controlling the middle of the park with Jacob Lee and Tanner Chamblin playing well but the defense had to be careful of Wheeler’s two speedy forwards. In the 29th minute a Wheeler free kick was blocked by Caulin Collier near the penalty spot. Jeffrey Degen was replaced by Stephen Dunbar in the 35th minute. Wheeler then had another quick break which was stopped by Carter Rhoad but in the 36th minute he could not stop yet another break by Toure who gave Wheeler the lead 1 – 0. Northview needed to keep up their concentration but from the kick-off Tanner Chamblin managed to get in a good shot which the keeper saved. From the keeper’s long clearance Wheeler broke down the left wing and bringing the ball into the box, scored again, exactly one minute after their first goal, to lead 2 – 0.
Northview really did not deserve to be down at half time but the warning signs had been there and Wheeler’s fast counter attacks were mainly one forward player. For the start of the second half Chase Reineke replaced Chad Elsey and Coach C told Caulin Collier to man mark the forward and the results paid off. This closed down Wheeler’s attack and Eric Carrion took up the cause for Northview. He had one chance in the 47th minute which he headed over but he made no mistake the following minute. He broke into the center of Wheeler’s penalty area and as the keeper came out Eric skipped to his right, rounded him and slotted home the ball to half the deficit 2 – 1. Northview were playing well and got their just rewards three minutes later in the 51st minute. Jarrod Neser threw the ball in to Dan Schwartz and he won a corner. Jacob Lee took the corner which Dan Schwartz headed in to tie the game 2 – 2. Despite having dominated the first six minutes of the second half and scored twice Northview subbed-in Chad Elsey and Jason Scannella for Tyler Chamblin and Chris Britton.
In the 57th minute Jeffrey Degen showed good skill when he took a Jarrod Neser pass on his chest, controlled it, turned and shot just wide. In the 60th minute Chris came back on for Jason. In the 64th minute Jacob Lee was replaced by Nick James for a couple of minutes as Coach Mora talked tactics with Jacob in the line. Jacob returned as a striker rather than in his usual midfield role. This proved a masterful move as within a minute Jacob won a corner and then following a nice pass from Jeffrey Degen, Jacob Lee carried the ball into the Wheeler box and fired in a goal to give the Titans the lead 3 – 2.
After 69 minutes Nick James came on for Chris Britton as Northview knew Wheeler would push for the equalizer. Northview held their own and with five minutes remaining Jason Scannella replaced Nick. Following a strange yellow card for Caulin Collier, Tyler Chamblin replaced him for a couple of minutes as the Titans held on for their second region win.
Final score: Northview Titans 3 – 2 Wheeler Wildcats
