Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries
Northview v. Chattahoochee 1-4
March 9th, 2007
After two tough, penalty shoot-out losses on the road for the Titans, the schedule didn’t get any easier with local rivals Chattahoochee Cougars, ranked #2 in the State lying in wait for them at Northview Stadium. Things got worse when, having already lost Jimmy Mitchell for the season, Tanner Chamblin had not recovered from his injury at Wheeler on Tuesday and was scratched from the line up. Ramu Annamalai was also not available for selection.
Will Whorton
Nathan Thompson Jarrod Nesser Caulin Collier Sam Bevan
Cameron Pratt Jacob Lee Stephen Glover Pall Kornmayer
Dan Schwartz Eric Carrion
Lots of the two teams play club soccer together so they know how each other plays and the first ten minutes was quite a dour affair as the two teams probed and tested each other with very few goal scoring chances being created. This changed after 10 mins when the Titans won a throw-in on the right wing which Jarrod Neser threw right into the six yard box. Pall Kornmayer deflected the ball and the Titans had the lead….or so we thought!! After discussing the play with the Cougar goalie, the referee disallowed the goal on the basis that no player had touched the ball after the throw-in.
The Cougars star player had not started the game but he was introduced shortly after that close shave for the Cougars. He immediately got involved and in the 12th minute he floated a free kick into the box which Will Whorton collected under pressure from the Cougars.
Northview had another excellent chance in the 13th minute when Cameron Pratt headed wide with the goalkeeper well beaten. The Titans had now lost out on two great chances to score on the Cougars, who had only conceded one goal in their first five games of the season. With the referee constantly blowing his whistle for fouls, the game lacked momentum and as the Titans heads dropped, the Cougars began to settle down and move the ball well around the field. In the 20th minute, the Cougars took the lead following a free kick from 33yds out. The ball was floated into the penalty area and headed-in to give the Cougars a 1 – 0 lead. They also won a corner the following minute which Nathan Thompson blocked and then passed to Pall Kornmayer to bring out of defense.
In the 23rd minute the Titans had a good move when Dan Schwartz won a throw-in near midfield. Pall Kornmayer threw the ball to Jarrod Neser who was fouled. Caulin Collier took the free kick which the Cougar defense headed out as far as Eric Carrion whose shot went out for a corner. With 12 minutes left in the half Josh Taylor replaced Pall Kornmayer, however, before Pall really had the chance to sit down, Caulin Collier received a yellow card so he had to be replaced by Pall.
Chattahoochee won a free kick 28 yds out with 4 minutes left in the first half and their player’s shot beat Will Whorton to give the Cougars a 2 – 0 lead at half time. After the promising start by Northview, Chattahoochee had forced their way back into the game and essentially controlled the last half hour.
Russell Bradford replaced Josh Taylor for the start of the second half. Before Northview were able to get comfortable a defensive slip let the Cougars score after only 75 seconds of the half and increase their lead to 3 – 0. Stephen Glover had one shot go wide before the Cougars scored their fourth goal in the 45th minute. Carter Rhoad replaced Will Whorton in the Titans’ goal shortly thereafter. The Cougars passing was much tighter than Northview’s who were struggling to find to string three or four passes together. Chattahoochee was very dangerous on the break and Carter Rhoad was quickly called into action to dive at the forward’s feet. In the 52nd minute Russell Bradford got a yellow card and was replaced by Steve Kim for the next couple of minutes. Josh Taylor then subbed in for Russell in the 60th minute.
Frustration was showing and in the 63rd minute another Titan, Jacob Lee, was given a yellow card. Carter Rhoad caught the Cougars’ free kick on the goal line. In the 70th minute the Titans won a corner which was taken by Jacob Lee and a great header by Stephen Glover was stopped by an even better save by the ’Hooch keeper. With seven minutes left a nice defensive play by Caulin Collier broke up a Cougar attack.
The Titans were looking to stop the whitewash and with three minutes left a wonderful free kick by Jacob Lee was caught by the keeper. Cameron Pratt did, however, score late in the game but it was too late to help the Titans.
Final score: Northview Titans 1 – 4 Chattahoochee Cougars
