Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries
Northview v. Dacula 7-0
March 17th, 2006
The Titans returned to their high-scoring ways in a 7-0 rout of the Dacula Falcons, with goal scoring spread among five Northview players. The Titans held Dacula to just a few threatening shots all night, and on those Will Whorton protected the goal for Northview to earn the shutout.
Northview dominated right from the start. On their second attack at 3 minutes, Sam Bevan led Mario Perazza streaking in on the left, and the Falcons had to clear over the touch line to avoid a disaster. Andrew Cameron’s throw in from 15 yards found Jeremy Stille on the right side of the box, and he headed in the first of his two goals of the night.
Five minutes later, Stille passed in from 30 yards to AJ Johnson, and after a short skirmish, the ball came out to Jeff Scannella on the right side, who dribbled across to the left and entered the penalty area, then shot back across to the right and found the net, and the Titans led 2-0.
Dacula’s first real opportunity came at 8 minutes, but they couldn’t capitalize. After a throw in from 20 yards, the Falcons’ turned the right corner, and shot from near the end line, but went wide of the near post. Their next possession dropped in a long shot from midfield, and Whorton easily stopped it.
After Jacob Lee was fouled near midfield, Sam Bevan put a free kick into the box and forced the Dacula keeper into an outstretched leap eight yards off his line -- a fine defensive play. From 18 to 25 minutes, Northview controlled the ball in the Falcons’ half of the field, but managed no clear shots. Finally, the long attack ended after AJ Johnson’s crossing shot from 10 yards on the right found Paul Kornmayer racing in toward the left post, but his shot back to the right went wide.
A breakdown in the Titans’ defense let an attacker slip by on a long pass on the left side. Dacula cracked a shot from 10 yards on the left, but Whorton shut it down. Northview came back on attack; Glover’s shot from 25 yards was saved. As Dacula returned upfield, Jacob Lee was called for a push at midfield, but the free kick only got as far as Stephen Gulia’s head. Gulia, Tanner Chamblin, and Stille kept the Falcons outside the 25 yard area most of the rest of the match.
With Northview pressing again, the Falcons were called for a foul in the penalty area – Jeff Scannella buried the penalty kick for a 3-0 Titan margin. A minute later, Andrew Cameron was fouled at 30 yards, and Scannella’s free kick tore thru the air, with the Falcons’ keeper punching it at the last moment to avoid another goal, but giving the Titans a corner kick.
At 34 minutes, Northview scored yet again, with Andrew Cameron taking the ball in from midfield. Seeing the Dacula goalkeeper drifting to the left side, Cameron drove a shot from 30 yards to the lower right corner. A diving Dacula goalkeeper couldn’t reach it, and the Titans had a 4th goal. Northview displayed more fine play making in the last few minutes of the half, with headers by Andrew Cameron and Jeremy Stille being saved or going just over the crossbar. After a foul by the Falcons to Lee at midfield with just 11 seconds left, Scannella’s hustle almost paid off. A quick shot from just inside midfield forced the keeper to move out to prevent it from ending up in the net, just before the buzzer.
The second 40 minutes was more of the same. Early on, the Titans kept passing and controlling, and Dacula couldn’t get past midfield. At 42 minutes, Jeff Scannella’s shot from 20 yards rebounded out and Jacob Lee just missed high on the second effort from 10 yards. Stephen Gulia kept clearing out free kicks from midfield range that approached the penalty area, setting up more Northview offense.
At 47 minutes, Sam Bevan made a run on the left, found an opening and at 15 yards took in a long crossing pass from the right side, then blasted a shot just under the crossbar for a GOAL and a 5-0 score. After the restart, the Titans kept it up, but the Falcons keeper repelled two fine plays. First, Jacob Lee was denied on a hard shot, then Kornmayer was open on the right, but the goalkeeper came out 10 yards to snatch the pass meant for him by Bevan. But when Northview’s defense won the goal kick at midfield, it quickly went in to Jeff Scannella, out to Chamblin at 45 yards, and in to Stephen Glover in the middle. Glover’s rocket shot from 25 yards that popped the back of the net quickly was declared the “prettiest goal of the night” by Titan moms in the stands.
Then just 2 minutes later at 53 minutes, Northview did it again, this time with Kornmayer’s throw in to Mario Perazza, who dribbled, passed to an open Jeremy Stille, who finished it from 10 yards for a 7-0 score.
Northview continued to press for the remainder of the second half, with several more scoring chances. At 62 minutes, Andrew Stoniecki fed Mario Perazza at 15 yards, but Perazza’s shot was controlled by the keeper. In the 71st minute, after AJ Johnson was taken down from behind on a red-card foul, Scannella’s free kick from 25 yards went just high. Next, Scannella fed Perazza but the Falcons keeper came out to 16 yards to break up the play. With just two minutes left, Stoniecki threw in to Perazza, and his shot was blocked out for a corner kick. Jacob Lee’s inbound kick to 10 yards was headed by Stoniecki but the keeper dove to make the low save. In the final two minutes, Scannella crossed from 5 yards on the left to AJ Johnson, but again the goalkeeper saved on AJ’s shot. A final shooting flurry came after Stoniecki was held at 20 yards out. Sam Bevan’s free kick bounced off the cross bar, then a second shot rebounded back off the cross bar, and finally Dacula’s keeper controlled the ball with Titans surrounding him.
