Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries

Northview v. Roswell 1-2
March 21st, 2007

The game against Sprayberry was postponed last Friday, which was just as well since Sam Bevan, Tanner Chamblin and Cameron Pratt were all unavailable.  While Sam and Tanner were back and ready to go against Roswell tonight the Titans were still without Cameron and had now lost Russell Bradford to a broken hand.  The weather was an extremely warm 79F at kick-off with the following line-up:-

Will Whorton
Tanner Chamblin                     Jarrod Nesser              Caulin Collier              Sam Bevan
Steve Kim                   Jacob Lee        Stephen Glover           Pall Kornmayer
Dan Schwartz             Eric Carrion

Northview got the game off to a good start in the first minute when they won a free kick mid-way inside the Roswell half.  Sam Bevan hit a wonderful free kick which had the Roswell keeper at full stretch to tip over the bar and win the Titans an early corner.  Unfortunately, nothing came of the corner.  After 4 minutes a nice pass sent Steve Kim through the middle of the Roswell defense but their keeper was quick off his line and beat Steve to the ball.  In these early stages the Titans were the more dangerous looking team and in the 7th minute a long throw by Jarrod “Long - ball” Neser was headed out by Roswell to Dan Schwartz but his shot went wide.  The next minute a nice move involving our midfield general, Jacob Lee, and Dan Schwartz was broken up at the edge of the Hornets’ box.  The Titans won the ball back but, to the dismay of the traveling Titans’ fans, were adjudged to have fouled a Roswell player near the center circle.  Again the Titans were able to quickly recover the ball from Roswell but a back pass to Will Whorton turned horribly wrong as the ball bobbled just before Will kicked it clear and he could only watch as the ball went into the goal to give the Roswell Hornets a thoroughly undeserved lead in the 10th minute.

Northview continued to apply the pressure as both Sam Bevan and Jarrod Neser pushed forward in support of their midfield and whenever Roswell attacked they were kept well out of range by Tanner Chamblin and Caulin Collier.  The Titans got their well deserved equalizer in the 15th minute.  General Lee won a free kick midway in the Roswell half and he chipped the ball over the heads of the Roswell defense where Jarrod Neser was lurking to tap the ball in past the Roswell goalie.

Before Roswell could restart the game Ramu Annamalai replaced Steve Kim.  After a couple of minutes Roswell won a throw-in near the Titans penalty area and the long throw was cleared by the Titans’ defense.  Pall Kornmayer picked up the ball inside his own half and as he surged through the center circle, he was repeatedly fouled but did not lose the ball.  Despite still having the advantage, the referee blew for a foul and stopped a Northview breakaway.  The free kick was passed to Ramu Annamalai and his low cross into the Roswell penalty area was well cleared by the Hornets.  You can make your own luck at this game, often by hustling after everything and that is what Roswell did in the next move.  From their clearance the ball went to Caulin Collier and a Roswell forward in the center circle and Caulin won the aerial battle but his header caught the Roswell player in the back and bounced towards the Titans’ goal.  Roswell took the ball down the left wing and the low hard cross was stopped in the middle of the six yard box by Sam Bevan and cleared just before a Roswell player got there.

The Titans came close to grabbing the lead in the 23rd minute when Tanner Chamblin fed the ball through to Eric Carrion who tried to dribble his way past the Hornets’ defense only to win throw-in.  Jarrod Neser took the throw from the left wing and Stephen Glover collected it near the right corner flag.  Stephen won a throw-in which he took himself and threw it to Jarrod whose chip into the six yard box appeared to beat the goalie but he was quick to recover and saved the ball as it went behind him.  Next, the referee had eagle eyes as he spotted some infringement from 35 yds (this may have been the one time he was not up with play) and awarded Caulin “Killer” Collier a yellow card.  Nathan Thompson replaced Caulin during his time off the field.  Three minutes later Nathan was back on the field as Jarrod Neser had to come off with an injury.  Roswell looked dangerous as they attacked down the right wing in the 28th minute and Tanner Chamblin headed away for a corner to stifle the move.  Pall Kornmayer helped to clear the subsequent corner.  Roswell kept up the attack and Will Whorton had to go down quickly to save a shot at the 30 minute mark.  After another Roswell shot went wide, Coach C. brought on Josh Taylor for Ramu with 8 minutes left in the half.

With two minutes left, Northview should have taken the lead.  A long clearance by Will Whorton went towards Dan Schwartz and as he chased the ball the Roswell keeper came out and got to it first but his clearance careened off Dan towards Josh Taylor who passed it to Eric Carrion who shot wide from six yards out.

The second half saw the staring line-up return and the Hornets earning a yellow card in the first two minutes but apart from a shot by Eric Carrion in the 46th minute the first nine minutes was pretty uneventful.  Eric was hustling and in the 49th minute he chased a ball, which appeared to be going out, down the right wing and managing to keep it in he sent in a cross which the Hornet goalie just smothered as Dan Schwartz was running in.  Tanner Chamblin picked up his first yellow card of the season in the 50th minute and was replaced for a couple of minutes by Ramu Annamalai.  Roswell were playing better in the second half and following one shot wide of the goal, Caulin Collier made a good sliding tackle to break up another Hornet attack.  With 55 minutes gone Josh Taylor replaced Steve Kim.  Two minutes later the Titans won a corner as a Roswell pass was deflected by Sam Bevan’s face to Dan Schwartz who raced towards the left hand goal post but he was wrong footed and his shot was knocked out for the corner.  The Roswell keeper did well to collect Jacob Lee’s cross near the back post.  The Titans were looking for the go-ahead goal and following one good save from a Stephen Glover shot, the keeper responded again when a Tanner Chamblin cross dropped nicely for Eric Carrion but before he could shoot, the keeper bravely dove at his feet.

Once again, against the run of play, Roswell snatched a goal.  In the 60th minute, a long throw was headed clear by Pall Kornmayer but the Roswell thrower picked up the clearance and chipped the ball towards the Titan’s back post where players turned their back on the ball and it fell into the net to give Roswell a 2 – 1 lead.

In the 70th minute the Titans squandered a great chance of equalizing.  Jarrod Neser took a long throw from the left wing and a Roswell defender headed the ball off the goal line to Josh Taylor but his hurried shot was blasted over the bar.  Despite controlling much of the remainder of the game Northview couldn’t get another goal and fell to a rather undeserved loss.

Final score: Northview Titans 1 – 2 Roswell Hornets
