Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries
Northview v. Alpharetta 3-0
March 23rd, 2007
With Cameron Pratt still only half fit and Russell Bradford’s broken hand keeping him out, Coach C. brought up two freshmen from the JV team; Chris Britton and Tyler Chamblin. The weather was an extremely warm 79F at kick-off with the following line-up, which was somewhat different from usual:-
Will Whorton
Ramu Annamalai Caulin Collier Nathan Thompson
Dan Schwartz Tanner Chamblin Jacob Lee Sam Bevan
Stephen Glover Eric Carrion Jarrod Neser
The first half summary is rather brief since I lost the recorded commentary, however, suffice to say that the Titans dominated the possession and out-shot the Raiders 8 to 3. The shots on goal statistics were a little closer at 2 to 1 but in the all important statistic of goals the Titans led 1 to 0 at half time. The goal had come very early on in the game as the Titans applied a lot of early pressure and from a Jacob Lee corner on the left wing, Stephen Glover rose unchallenged at the near post to power in a good header. Not content with doubling his goals tally for the season Stephen also doubled his yellow cards for the season. Dan Schwartz suffered a cut head in the first minute and sat out for a good part of the half which helped Coach C. give playing time to the two JV players Chris Britton and Tyler Chamblin. When Tyler came on mid way through the first half it marked a first for the boys varsity with two brothers playing at the same time. While the Titans had a lot of possession the game did not flow too well since the referee was whistling for everything and called 10 fouls on Northview and 16 fouls on Alpharetta, despite the game being quite well mannered.
Chris Britton started the second half in place of Jarrod Neser who had suffered an injury. Nathan Thompson was in the thick of things very early on, first of all heading clear a Raiders throw-in then making a long clearance down the right wing…all in the first minute. In the 45th minute Caulin Collier got retribution for a first half tackle from a Raiders player and received a yellow card. Jarrod Neser was fit once again and replaced Caulin. When Caulin was permitted back on the field minutes later he replaced Nathan Thompson. After ten minutes neither team had mustered up a shot at goal and the Alpharetta goalie went walkabout on a couple of occasions, one of which saw him very lucky to escape a penalty call as he was all over the back of Eric Carrion who was in the near corner of the box with his back to goal and unable to turn because of the goalkeeper’s antics. At the 52nd minute mark the Raiders won a corner when Tanner Chamblin was forced to put the ball out. Northview defended well and the ball was deflected to Eric Carrion who played a one-two with Stephen Glover before winning a throw-in deep in the Raider’s territory. Stephen Glover headed over from the throw-in.
Jacob Lee got a yellow card in the 54th minute and this gave Steve Kim the chance to come on. A mix-up between two Titan defenders allowed the Raiders to shoot across the face of the Titan goal in the 55th minute but other than that Alpharetta rarely troubled the Titan defense. Looking for more offense to score a second goal, Coach C replaced Ramu Annamalai with Cameron Pratt in the 56th minute. Despite the superiority in possession, Northview were still struggling in the last third of the field and midway through the half, Stephen Glover’s header eight minutes earlier had been the only shot on target….by either team.
Northview’s constant pressure did produce a goal from an unlikely source in the 66th minute. Jarrod Neser took a long throw from the left side and Stephen Glover got his head to the ball but he couldn’t really control it and it fell outside of the box near the ‘D” where Tanner Chamblin calmly hit a beautiful volley over the head of the Alpharetta keeper. Being a defender, Tanner might not score many, but when he does it was a beauty!
Alpharetta had a good move with five minutes left as they worked down the right wing, however, the cross was cut out by Will Whorton. With two minutes left Northview extended their lead when a nice through ball saw Stephen Glover run towards the goal, just left of center and, despite being challenged by a Raider defender, as the goalkeeper came off his line Stephen chipped the ball over his head and into the net.
Final score: Northview Titans 3 – 0 Alpharetta Raiders
