Northview Titans Varsity Boys Game Summaries

Northview v. Lassiter 1-2
April 13th, 2007

The temperature was very pleasant as the Titans began with the following line-up which was apparently experimental for Coach C.:-

Will Whorton
Dan Schwartz             Caulin Collier              Sam Bevan                  Nathan Thompson
Ramu Annamalai                    Tanner Chamblin         Steve Kim       Cameron Pratt
Jarrod Neser                Jacob Lee

The Titans began the game quite well and in the first five minutes looked lively and the more likely of the two teams to cause problems to their opponent’s defenders.  Lassiter were very deliberate and methodical in their build up allowing the Titans time to regroup whenever they were under pressure.  After 6 mins a long cross field ball to Jarrod Neser gave him the chance to get a header on target which the Lassiter keeper easily collected.  In the 9th minute Jacob Lee and Cameron Pratt combined well down the left wing  but the cross was cleared by Lassiter and the quick counter attack forced Will Whorton to go down to his left to grab the ball.  After ten minutes Coach C. brought on Stephen Glover for Steve Kim.  Although the Titans moved the ball around well in midfield, the final pass was sometimes lacking and they showed a reluctance to shoot for goal as they neared the penalty area.  In the 18th minute Josh Taylor came on for Ramu Annamalai.

Lassiter often took their free kicks very quickly, playing the ball short and looking to pull the Titan defense out of position although when they tried the long cross into the Titan box, Will Whorton was there to punch the ball clear.  With 21 minutes gone, the Titans won a free kick near the center circle.  Sam Bevan’s kick was headed to Tanner Chamblin and he laid it off for Jacob Lee who shot high.  In the 24th min. Eric Carrion replaced Nathan Thompson and Tanner Chamblin dropped back into the defense to allow Eric to play midfield.  The next minute Sam Bevan played a long cross field ball to Jarrod Neser who was through behind the Trojan’s defense but incorrectly thinking he was offside, he didn’t control the ball and the chance was lost.  In the 26th min. Lassiter had a quick break that was broken up by Will Whorton diving to his left to smother the ball.  Four minutes later another Lassiter attack ended up with Will running out of his box and clearing the ball with his knee under pressure from a Lassiter forward.  At this stage Lassiter looked the more dangerous and Caulin Collier had to be aware to clear a couple of dangerous moves.  Lassiter took the lead in the 35th minute as the Titan defense struggled to clear a ball.  Eventually a Northview defender tried to kick the ball clear but it bounced off a Lassiter forward and rebounded towards the Titan goal.  With the ball spinning quite a lot Will Whorton was unable to control it and it landed fortuitously at the  foot of a Lassiter forward who tapped it in to give them the lead at 1 – 0.

With three minutes left in the half Sam Bevan hit a shot over the Lassiter goal as the Titans searched for an equalizer.

For the start of the second half, Coach C. began with a more traditional line up of Will in goal, Tanner, Caulin, Jarrod and Sam in defense, Steve Kim, Jacob, Stephen Glover and Eric in midfield and Cameron and Dan up front.  After five minutes Stephen Glover and Jacob Lee worked the ball well and won a free kick 25 yds out from the Trojan’s goal.  Sam Bevan beat the wall with his kick but the keeper caught it easily on his line.  Northview were again the more dominant team and Dan Schwartz won a free kick on the left wing midway inside the Lassiter half.  Jacob Lee curled over the ball and as a Lassiter defender headed clear, he was bowled over by Sam Bevan as he climbed to meet the cross.  In the 50th min. Northview were unlucky not to win a penalty as Jacob Lee appeared to have been fouled inside the box but the referee was having none of it.  After a nice move involving Jacob, Stephen and Steve broke down in the 53rd minute, Lassiter attacked down the left flank and Tanner Chamblin made a good clearance.  With 57 minutes gone Jacob Lee fed the ball to Cameron Pratt who had his back to goal, he turned and shot but it was straight at the keeper.

Midway through the second half Russell Bradford replaced Steve Kim and Nathan Thompson replaced Eric Carrion.  Following a Tanner Chamblin free kick, Stephen Glover headed the ball through to Cameron Pratt but he was too quick and was called for offside.  Northview deservedly grabbed the equalizer in the 75th minute when Jarrod Neser took a throw –in from the right wing and Dan Schwartz running in near the left side post headed passed the Lassiter keeper.  Keeping up the pressure the Titans nearly got another seconds later. Cameron Pratt found Russell Bradford deep on the right wing and his cross from the byline was met by Sam Bevan diving full length to force a great save by the Lassiter keeper.  The ball rebounded to Jacob Lee, who only had a fraction of a second to react, and he hit it wide of the left post.  Continuing the pressure, Jacob Lee drew a yellow card for a Lassiter player and Sam Bevan’s free kick just missed, hitting the rear of the goal support with two minutes remaining.  Lassiter were hanging on and with six seconds left Russell Bradford crossed to Cameron Pratt but his header went over the bar.  At full time the game was tied 1 – 1 and two five minute periods of extra time were needed.

The teams were more tentative in the extra time but Stephen Glover had a chance in the 3rd minute when his shot to the near post was scrambled away by the Lassiter keeper.  Disaster then struck the Titans with two seconds left in the first half as a Lassiter forward worked the ball across the right side of the penalty box and down towards the byline where he hit it back across the face of the Titan goal and a forward scored with literally the last kick of the half.  Despite their best efforts in the second extra time period the Titans could not muster up another goal and lost a heartbreaker 2 – 1 in overtime.

Final score: Northview Titans 1 – 2 Roswell Trojans (OT)
