Northview Titans Varsity Girls Game Summaries
Northview v. Milton - 1-0 ( OT)
March 9th
Northview had a great victory over Milton, won on penalty kicks after a game that was scoreless after regulation play and 2 5-minute overtimes.
During the first half, most scoring opportunities for both teams came from corner kicks. About 5 minutes into the game, Jen Gornall received an excellent pass from Kayla Griffin and forced Northview’s first corner kick by deliberately sending the ball off a Milton defender. In spite of a great corner kick by Nicole Ernst, Northview was not able to score.
At 8 minutes into the game, Northview had another promising scoring attempt beginning with a powerful (and long) throw-in by Kate Buccino that Meghan Swinall headed down field to Emily Dixon, who headed it to Jen Gornall. Jen shot, but sent the ball wide of the goal.
Northview’s next scoring attempt came at 15 minutes into the game when Brittany Bauschka made a well-placed free kick to Meghan Swindall who took a beautiful, high shot that the Milton keeper was able to bat out of harm’s way.
Northview’s defense (Brittany Bauschka, Amy McDonald, Eileen McIntire, Molly Burke) applied strong pressure on the Milton players, not allowing any shots on goal until near the half-way mark in the first half. This Milton attempt was a very weak shot that keeper Whitney Ernst easily picked up.
Northview had some excellent passing at about 20 minutes into the 1st half to set up another goal attempt, but Northview was called offsides, before they could shoot.
A free kick for Milton was their first serious scoring opportunity, but Northview was able to head the ball out of the goal. Both Milton and Northview had several corner kicks in the latter part of the 1st half, none of which resulted in a goal. As the 1st half came to a close, Milton had several shots on goal that Whitney was able to catch, including a nice save on a ball that bounced very high a few feet in front of the goal, but Whitney jumped to catch it and prevent it bouncing over her head.
The second half had scoring attempts by Emily Dixon four minutes into the half and Kate Buccino about 14 minutes into the half. Milton scored at the halfway point but the scorer was offsides and the goal was called back. Milton took several additional shots on goal, that keeper Jillian English was able to handle.
With about 4 minutes left in the half, Nicole Ernst stole the ball from a Milton midfielder, passed the ball to Emily Dixon, who passed the ball to Jacqueline Klein. Jacqueline had a beautiful shot, which unfortunately the keeper was able to catch.
Milton came on strong the last few minutes of the game, with a shot that hit the goal post and bounced back out. Milton recovered this and took a second shot that Jillian caught. Jillian had another good save when she came out of the goal, beat the Milton player to the ball and dove on it at the corner of the box.
As regulation play ended the score was tied at 0 – 0.
In the first of the 2-minute overtimes, Kate Buccino had a beautiful shot on goal that the keeper was able to save. In the second of the overtimes, Milton had the only shot on goal, which keeper Jillian caught.
Moving to the penalty kick stage, Milton scored only twice, keeper Whitney saved two shots and one went over the goal. Northview scored 3 times in the first four attempts for the win. Scoring for Northview were Meghan Swindall, Nicole Ernst and Emily Dixon.
